The Legend of Korra: The Mystery of Penquan Island is the latest release in a series of graphic novels that tie in to the animated series, continuing the story after the conclusion of the Nickelodeon show The Legend of Korra (“LOK”).

Published by Dark Horse Comics on March 4, 2025, this graphic novel is 80 pages and is written by Kiku Hughes.

Description:
When a strange missing persons case falls into his lap, Mako is forced to choose between his job and doing what he feels is right! An upturned room and an unhelpful witness aren’t promising starts to the investigation, but when his brother Bolin comes across a surprising clue that ties their own mother to the case, the pair embark on a journey to the small, rustic island of Penquan. The island’s inhabitants seem to have things to hide, and the brothers are determined to get to the bottom of it—even if it means uncovering uncomfortable parts of their family’s past.

Most of the previous Avatar: The Last Airbender (“ATLA”) graphic novel scripts have been written by either Gene Leun Yang or Faith Erin Hicks, while the LOK graphic novels were written by Michael Dante Dimartino himself. However, Kiku Hughes is not a new writer in the ATLA/LOK graphic novel scene.

Previously, Eisner-nominated Hughes was the writer, illustrator, and letterer for the short story Origami (collected in Team Avatar Tales) and wrote Clearing the Air, a story collected in the anthology The Legend of Korra: Patterns in Time. Outside of her ATLA/LOK credits, Hughes also published her debut graphic novel, Displacement on August 4, 2020.

This release joins the seven previously released LOK graphic novels, pictured below.

Note: Though originally released in three parts, both Turf Wars and Ruins of the Empire are now available in collected editions, with both a hardcover library edition option and a paperback omnibus option.
