BOOK BLURB
Voya Thomas never expected to be the first witch in generations to fail her Calling, the trial that every witch must pass to receive their powers.
When her ancestor offers her a second chance, Voya accepts—only to be told that her task is to kill her first love, and that failure will result in her entire family losing their magic.
Voya has never been in love, but after a genetic matchmaking program pairs her with Luc, a tech genius and huge jerk, she finds herself torn between her family and her reluctance to kill the boy she’s supposed to fall in love with.
REVIEW
I loved Voya, who is an imperfect character and yet still incredibly likeable; she has a strong character arc and shows tremendous growth throughout the story. I loved how this book revolves around family, community, and expectations.
Despite a large cast of characters, each person is well fleshed out with their own backstory, interests, and personality.
The romantic premise was interesting, and though I never ended up loving Luc I did really enjoy the journey of their romantic relationship.
Liselle Sambury uniquely blends fantasy and science fiction, creating a believable futuristic and high tech world while still allowing for the possibility of witches and magic.
Eetails like new slang terms and realistic technological advancements along with descriptions of clothing and mouthwatering food rounded out Voya’s world.
I loved how queer normative her family is, and how there are multiple trans characters.
Overall, this was a solid and unique story that I recommend!
