BOOK BLURB

This story follows Jiang Liu, head of the world’s largest nongovernmental intelligence network, Qi Fei, the director of top secret military research institute, and Yun Fan, an archaeologist who has discovered evidence of extraterrestrials approaching Earth.

REVIEW

Jiang Liu is a bit of a smartass and his rivalry with Qi Fei was so fun. Yun Fan was smart and independent, and I loved her character arc as she deals with her father’s legacy. I appreciated that the trio didn’t fall into a love triangle; instead each character feels truly fleshed out and their relationships are much more complex and developed.

The story features tons of futuristic tech, such as communication devices, wearable tech, augments, personal AI assistants, and even mech suits. Sometimes translations can feel stilted, but this was not the case here. I found the text engaging and even quite funny at times (especially the scenes with Jiang Liu and Qi Fei). I also appreciated Ken Liu’s translation notes and the way he retained certain Chinese concepts.
