Book Blurb
“A new Latinx middle grade fantasy debut where a secret magical academy, an evil sorcerer, and a powerful, coveted gem awaits one girl in her quest to reunite her family.”
What This Book Meant to Me
Chloe’s story felt incredibly timely and relevant, given the current state of my country. As the daughter of undocumented immigrants, Chloe lives in constant fear of them getting detained. That is a fear shared by many in my community and it’s more important than ever to amplify stories about immigrants and their families.
One thing I loved about this book was that after Chloe is separated from her family, she finds support and community at the academy. I loved how students are sorted into “familias” and have godparents to look after them. This felt like a reflection of real life, as I’m heartened to see how my own community comes together to help people who are undocumented.
Lastly, while I’ve read many stories about magical schools, this is the first time I’ve read about a Latine magical school and I loved the representation! I love the way Chloe’s Mexican culture is integrated into this story, and how relatable Chloe felt to me. As a Mexican American, I rarely saw this kind of representation in the books I read growing up, so I am thrilled that kids today get to read awesome books like Chloe and the Agents of Magic.
