BOOK BLURB

After a prophecy foretold of a child who would rise to defeat the Eternal Khan, the five states of Zhuun joined together to prepare the prophecied hero for the challenge. Master Ling Taishi arrives to appraise the Prophecied Hero’s education, only to discover that Jian is a spoiled teen accustomed to being waited on hand and foot; far from ready to defeat anyone, much less the Eternal Khan. Taishi decides to take Jian’s training into her own hands, but when events take an unexpected turn she finds herself entangled in a situation that has far greater consequences than intended.

REVIEW

I was captivated from the first page and I am so impressed with the writing, which is witty and easy to read. The set up and world building were organically explained and created an immersive read. It features a cast of characters whose storylines intersect in unexpected ways, and just when I thought I was rooting for one side I was given an entirely different perspective. The women are so well written and I especially loved Taishi.

Taishi is is an older woman with plenty of practical martial arts experience under her belt and a no-nonsense attitude. Despite missing an arm, she remains a formidable threat and a total badass. Her interactions with Jian include plenty of humorous situations given their warring personalities. I hated Jian at first but he has a great character arc and really grew on me over the course of the novel.

There are multiple POVs, some more interesting than others, but overall I enjoyed the main characters and there were lots of fun side characters as well! Lots of action and martial arts/fight scenes. I have been looking for an epic fantasy series that I would love as much as The Poppy War, and this is definitely it for me. I think fans of The Last Airbender would also enjoy this. I’m very excited to read the next book.
