REVIEW
Thank you to Books Forward and the publisher for the digital copy of Chloe Vega and the Missing Unseen by Leslie Adame! This middle grade fantasy novel is the second book in the Chloe Vega series, and it’s best to read the series in order, starting with book one: Chloe Vega and the Agents of Magic.
This sequel begins about a year following the events of the first book. Chloe’s parents, still undocumented, are dealing with the aftermath of Osthall’s spell. Chloe, unable to seek magical guidance from her parents, must find a way to tell her sister the truth.
Osthall and his followers remain a formidable threat, providing high stakes, and I appreciated that the conflict between the Osthonians and the Agents of Magic has real complexity instead of being a simple good verses evil situation. The magical conflict ties into the immigration issues and prejudice that Chloe and her family face, making it very personal for her.
Chloe has to deal with friction in her friendships, and sometimes doesn’t know who she can really trust. Great new characters are introduced and I especially loved Reeth and his role in Chloe’s quest to master her new powers. The magical world is further developed with new spells, more gem lore, and awesome magical technology. Throughout the story, Chloe must confront her deepest fears, yet her journey is imbued with hope.
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was even better than the first one! I’m absolutely loving this series and can’t wait for the next book.
