REVIEW
Thank you Feiwel & Friends for the digital copy of Scorpion Deep by CG Drews! This is a standalone young adult horror novel, single POV and written in third person perspective.
The isle of Kelcarrow is described with vivid imagery, creating a gloomy and unsettling atmosphere for this gothic horror story. I loved the Eldritch sea god lore and the intrigue of secrets long buried, and the horrifying truths uncovered. The body horror depicted sent shudders down my spine, especially certain gory scenes. I also loved the beautiful illustrations of sea monsters!
Jonathan’s deep fear of being abandoned by his only two friends drives the story, and his softness and his trauma made him a very sympathetic character despite his flaws. His asexuality is explored through a queer love story, one that is obsessive and toxic, a dangerous bane to his loneliness. Jonathan’s story is tragic, and I know I’ll be thinking about this story for a long time.
I’ve read all of CG Drews’ YA Horror novels and Scorpion Deep quickly became my favorite! Highly recommend.
